Wix SEO and how can it help your products rank higher in search results

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the process of improving the visibility of a website or web page in search engine results pages (SERPs). This can be done by optimising the website content, structure, and on-page elements like titles, descriptions, and keywords.

When it comes to SEO for Wix stores, there are two main things to keep in mind:

  1. Wix stores are automatically optimised for SEO. This means that all the technical aspects of your store (like site structure and coding) are already taken care of and will help your store rank higher in search results.

  2. Wix also provides you with easy-to-use tools that let you further customise your store for better SEO. This includes things like adding alt text to product images, creating custom URLs, and setting meta tags.

Overall, Wix gives you everything you need to create a high-quality, optimised online store - giving you the best chance of ranking higher in search engine results pages.

Keyword research is important to help improve SEO for products on your Wix website

Choosing the right keywords for your products

One of the most important aspects of SEO is choosing the right keywords.

Keywords are the terms or phrases that potential customers use when they search for products like yours.

When choosing keywords, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Relevance:

The keywords you choose should be relevant to your products. If you sell women's clothing, for example, your keywords could include "women's clothes", "ladies fashion", or "women's dresses".

Searcher Intent:

Keywords should also reflect what the potential customer is looking for. Are they looking to buy a product? Find information? Compare prices? The keywords you choose should reflect this intent.

Competition:

Not all keywords are created equal. Some will be much more competitive than others. It's important to choose keywords that are relevant to your products, but also have low competition - that way, you're more likely to rank higher in search results for those keywords.

But, choosing your keywords isn't as simple as thinking about your products and coming up with what you think will be best. There are a few tools you can use to help with keyword research:

Google's Keyword Planner:

Google's Keyword Planner is a free tool that shows you how often certain keywords are searched for on Google. Just enter your keyword into the tool and it will show you the average monthly search volume. You need to have a Google Ads account to use this free tool, but you don't need to be actively spending money on ads. Take a look at the free tool here.

Ubersuggest

A keyword planner that is free and relatively simple to use. You can search by topic and discover a list of keywords with statistics like search volume, CPC (cost per click), and SEO difficulty. You can check out the Ubersuggest keyword tool here.

There are many keyword research tools out there. Take a look around and find one that works well for you. You can read more about keyword research and find a list of the top 5 keyword planning tools reviewed here.

The best ways to title and describe your products

Once you've chosen the right keywords for your products, it's time to start optimising your product titles and descriptions.

Your product title is one of the first things potential customers will see

It's important to make sure it's optimised for SEO. A good product title should:

Be clear and concise: A good product title should be clear and to the point. It should describe what the product is and what it does.

Include relevant keywords: As with your product descriptions, your titles should also include relevant keywords (but don't stuff them in there!). Including relevant keywords will help your product show up in more search results.

Be unique: A good title should also be unique. This is important for two reasons. First, it helps your product stand out from the competition. Second, it's a good way to avoid getting penalised by Google for duplicate content.

Your product description is another important piece of real estate on your Wix website.

A good product description should:

Be well-written and engaging:

Potential customers will make a split-second decision about whether or not to click on your product, based on your description. Product descriptions can be hard to get right and depend largely on your customer demographic. In general, your product description should not be a list of the features, it should be more about what it can do for your customer to make their life better.

Include relevant keywords:

Just like your product titles, your descriptions should also include relevant keywords. Including relevant keywords will help your product show up in more search results.

Be unique:

It's important to make sure your descriptions are unique. This is important for two reasons. First, it helps your product stand out from the competition. Second, it's a good way to avoid getting penalised by Google for duplicate content.

How to optimise your products for search engines using Wix

Thankfully Wix has made the product SEO process very easy to put in place, here's a step by step guide to Wix product search engine optimisation.

1. Create a new product listing or open up a product listing that you already have.

Create a new product or edit an existing one to start improving your SEO for wix products

2. Add the name of your product. Make sure to include the main keyword that you have chosen for your product. This is important because the product name will become the <h1> heading on the product page of your website.

Use keywords in the product name and description for your SEO

3. Write your product description, including your full main keyword placed in the first sentence and then at least once or twice again throughout the description. Try not to use it more than that to avoid being flagged for keyword stuffing.

4. Fill in the rest of the fields, like price, variants and stock availability. This is not SEO related but is required to complete your listing.

5. On the right-hand side you will find a box with the title 'Promote'. Click 'Edit SEO Settings'. It will ask you to save the changes you have made, go ahead and click save & continue.

6. Now you are in the SEO settings for your product, we are going to talk about each field in detail.

Creating your URL Slug

The advances settings for SEO on your wix website product listing page

Your URL slug will be auto-generated for you using your product name. The URL should include your main keyword, if you included it in the product name then it will already be in the URL Slug.

Your words should be separated using hyphens, Google treats URL hyphens as spaces, and the Slug should be a good description of what the product is. If your product name is long, you can shorten the URL slug and remove unnecessary words.

If you are editing an already existing listing then a 301 redirect is a must. Luckily, you won't need to do this yourself. Wix has this really cool feature where they automatically set up your redirects when you change a URL. Just make sure the feature is toggled on.

Creating your Title Tag

Your title tag becomes the headline of your listing on a search engine results page. Wix will auto-generate a title tag for you based on your product name and Wix branding, but we recommend that you edit this to something more SEO friendly.

Your title tag should:

Be under 60 characters:

anything over 60 characters will be cut off on SERPs.

Include your main keyword: this is important for Google to know what your product is.

Be unique:

Your product description and title tag should be unique to avoid being penalised by Google for duplicate content.

To edit your title tag, simply click on the field and type in your new title. Wix will give you a character count so you can keep track of how long your title is.

A good way to write your title tag would be to have the name of your product first, followed by the name of your brand.

Creating your Meta description

Your meta description is the short paragraph of text that appears below your title tag on a SERP. This is your chance to convince potential customers to click through to your product listing, so make it count. Wix will auto-generate a meta description for you using your product description, but it will be too long and not suitable for good SEO.

Your meta description should:

Be under 156 characters including spaces:

Anything over 156 characters will be cut off on SERPs.

Include your main keyword near the start: this is important for Google to associate your product name, description, title tag and URL slug and be confident that your page is suitable for the search results.

Be unique:

As with your product description, your meta description should be unique to avoid being penalised by Google for duplicate content.

To edit your meta description, simply click on the field and type in your new description. Wix will give you a character count so you can keep track of how long your description is.

Your meta description should include a call to action, telling the customer what they will get by clicking through to your product page. For example: "Buy now and get free shipping on orders over £100."

Finally, make sure you allow search engines to index this page, the toggle switch will automatically be switched on, and then hit save at the bottom of the screen. This will take you back to the main product page, make sure you hit save again in the top right of the page.
