Unfortunately, many product images look amateurish and unprofessional. This can be a major turnoff for potential customers. In this article, we'll show you three ways to make your product images look amazing.

Why product images are important

Good product images make shoppers feel confident about their purchase and can encourage them to buy something that they may not have otherwise considered. Poor quality product images can have the opposite effect, causing customers to mistrust your store and making them less likely to buy anything. So if you want to make sure that your store is successful, it's important to put some effort into making your product images look amazing.

How to make your product images look amazing

We are going to use Canva in these examples. If you're not already using Canva to edit your images and easily create amazing graphic designs, where have you been? We have partnered up with Canva to get you a 30 day free trial of their Pro Plan, so you can give all of these design tips a try. It's easy-to-use graphic design software has LOADS of free-to-use images, videos and audio. Packed full of free-to-use templates created by professional designers, you will be amazed at what you can do.

1. Remove the background

Removing the background in Canva is a Pro-level feature, if you want to try it out you can get your pro plan free for 30 days with this exclusive link.

If you have taken your own product images at home, there's a strong chance that you don't have a professional backdrop - or even a neatly arranged home set-up. That doesn't have to be a problem!

Did you know, that even professional photographers always remove the background of professional product photos during the editing stage?

After we have removed the background we're going to learn how to add your product image onto a different professional backdrop that will make your products pop.

Learn how to use the background remover tool in Canva

Here's how we did it:

Step 1: Take an image of your product, against a white background and in good lighting. Upload your image onto Canva. You can use the upload media button, or simply drag and drop the image onto your design.

Step 2: Select the image of your product and hit the background remover tool that you can find in the 'Edit image' menu.

The background remover tool is really powerful! It's going to remove everything except the product itself, and we don't want that. We need to preserve the natural shadows of the products, so we can make them look natural against their new backdrop.

You will want to select the restore tool, click show original image and then carefully restore the shadowed areas that might have been removed.

Step 3: Choose the background that you want to use for your new product photo backdrop. Keep it simple and clean, something white or light with minimal design elements. You don't want to take the focus away from your product.

Step 4: We added a shadow of a palm leaf. You can choose anything you like or even nothing at all. With this product we wanted to reinforce the selling point of the natural ingredients, so we chose to include an element of nature.

Step 5: Add the product image that you just removed the background from.

And that's it! The final product is the appearance of a professionally staged product image. How easy was that!

2. Adjust the brightness, contrast and other image settings

There will be times when you don't need to change the background at all.

Just using some simple adjustments to the brightness, contrast and sharpness can make a massive difference.

Adjust your image settings using canva for your Wix website

We made tiny adjustments to this image, and it has made the product pop!

Here's what we did:

  • Brightness setting to 10

  • Contrast setting to 5

  • Blur setting to - 5 (we took it to negative, so rather than blurring, we made the image sharper)

3. Add a filter to your product image

Now, you need to be careful with this one, we're not talking about adding the same type of filter that we all use on Instagram and definitely, no facetune is required here!

But, adding a simple overlay can change the mood of the photo. Take a look at this example.

Use the free filters in canva to create professional images for your Wix website

We used a filter here called 'Afterglow'. It's added an editorial feel to the image. While you wouldn't use this image as the main product image in your Wix eCommerce store, you probably would use it as a featured image somewhere else on your site like the home page or in a blog about your products.

Lighting is key!

Make sure you are taking your photos in good lighting. Natural light is always best. There is nothing better than natural sunlight to get a great shot of your product.

Be careful to avoid the glare of bright direct sunlight. If you are in a bright sunny room, try covering the window with a white bed sheet to diffuse the light coming in.

You might want to use some additional lighting, grab your ring light and use this to highlight the products and create natural-looking shadows.

Use a white background or a light background with minimal design elements.

This will help to keep the focus on your product and make it easier to remove the background while you are editing. Use a large white sheet of paper, or some white bed sheets. There's no need to invest in a professional backdrop.

Tips for editing photos for your online shop

Take LOADS of photos!

Capture lots of images from all different angles! Something might seem like a bad idea in your mind, but then when you shoot it they might turn out great! You can always delete all the images you don't need and that's much easier than setting up your photo shoot all over again to get more shots.

So there you have it! You have learned how to make your product images look better using Canva.

You can improve the quality of your images by removing backgrounds, adjusting brightness and contrast, and using filters. With a little bit of effort, you can make your product images look professional and appealing to potential customers.
